Is It Possible To Have a Shower In A Freestanding Bathtub?

Is It Possible To Have a Shower In A Freestanding Bathtub?

Yes, you may install a shower over a freestanding bathtub. The most common bathtubs to use with a shower are P-shaped, L-shaped, and standard. While a shower may be built over any bathtub, these three options provide the most straightforward installation technique for a freestanding shower bath.

When installing a shower over a freestanding bathtub, several factors must be considered. If the freestanding bath is placed close to a wall, the shower head and other components can be easily mounted on the wall.

Installing a freestanding tub might be a little more challenging, though, if it is positioned in the centre of the space or away from any walls. This is because the shower will have to be built on the freestanding bath rather than on a wall. You will also need to consider the plumbing requirements.

Options to Consider When Installing a Shower Over a Freestanding Bathtub for Your Bathroom

When building a shower over a freestanding bathtub, you have two options to consider:

Wall-Mounted Shower

The first option is to mount the shower head and valve on the wall. This is one of the most common techniques for installing a shower with a freestanding bathtub.

Bath-Mounted Shower

The second option is that, if your tub is placed away from the wall,  the shower can be installed directly to the bath itself. Add a shower riser, support rod, curtain ring, and shower head. It takes longer, but it is quite easy to put a shower over a freestanding bath.

We suggest adding a shower curtain or screen to the freestanding bathtub. This will keep the surrounding flooring dry while the shower is in use.

The advantage of using a shower curtain is that it can be folded when not in use, allowing the freestanding bathtub to stay open for easy access to bathe. Certain shower heads, such as rainfall showerheads, may not need the installation of a shower curtain or shower screen.

Is a Freestanding Bath Suitable for a Wet Room?

Yes, you may install a freestanding bath in a wet room. However, we would not suggest it. This is because wet rooms are intended for usage with a shower rather than a bathtub.

A wet room doesn’t need an enclosure and typically has a glass screen, allowing for an open feel with a freestanding shower bath. Baths are not the best solution for wet rooms due to the way they are designed and drain. Wet rooms normally have a drain in the floor, and the floor is slightly sloping so that the water can easily drain.

When taking a shower, the water falls to the floor at a very steady and gradual pace. As a consequence, the floor does not flood and the water drains easily.

If you decide to build a freestanding bath, we suggest consulting with a professional plumber to see if it is possible in your specific wet room. While it may not be simple, with expert assistance, it can be possible.

A plumber would most likely need to build a separate drain and plumbing for the freestanding bath, so that the water drains straight from the wet room rather than onto the wet room floor. This would prevent stagnant water from draining slowly or even flooding. You will need to empty the bathtub’s water on your own.

Instead of draining through the wet room floor, the pipe would be more appropriate if it were supplied through the wall to accommodate a freestanding shower bath. But this is not always possible.
