Marble Bathroom Surfaces – A High End Finish

Marble Bathroom Surfaces – A High End Finish

With proper sealing and the best maintenance, using marble in your bathroom will make your sanctuary ooze glamour.

This exquisite natural material can be used in surfaces, as wall or floor tiles and much more. Some people like to use it in place of a bath panel, too, and smaller tiles can create a ‘skirting’ effect at the bottom of each wall. Marble is a natural stone (it is a re-crystallised version of limestone) and is sturdy and very long lasting. However, there is lots of upkeep to expect when you use marble extensively in your bathroom.

We advise any condensation that forms needs to be polished away regularly to keep the marble as immaculate as when it was first put in place. Although marble is a fairly dense stone, it will absorb liquids – especially those that you would use in the bathroom, such as oily bath products. If you prefer an alternative there is always porcelain. That still requires polishing, but it doesn’t demand the same maintenance as marble. Nobody would ever recognise the difference, although you would know that you don’t have marble installed!

 Marble Finish

Whether you opt for a matt or polished finish, marble looks stunning. It has been used for hundreds of years in buildings and we regularly see it in plush hotels and large houses that command the splendour that marble brings. However, it is being used more and more in domestic bathrooms, simply because it looks outstanding.

Polished marble is the best option in the bathroom as the process to obtain the polished finish helps to seal the natural pores in the material. Matt finished marble, though, won’t show up as many scratches as polished marble may. However, a matt finish is more porous and needs more attention.

 Installation & Maintenance

Before marble is prepared for installation, it needs to be sealed with a water-based silicone sealant that ensures it is fit to last. This helps to prolong its life and ensures that stains from bath products such as shampoos, hair dyes and oils, water spillages and general humidity in the bathroom are minimised. Remember the sealant will evaporate over time, so general maintenance on top of cleaning and polishing means that you must reseal the marble twice a year at the very least, especially in wet areas such as the shower or next to the bath or sink. Hard water areas will require more attention as the marble can easily dull with limescale deposits and very harsh cleaning products.

Attention to detail is the reason you may be considering using marble in your bathroom and that same focus on maintenance will ensure that your marble bathroom walls, floors and surfaces will look simply beautiful for many years. Keeping its lustre and life is the main issue in retaining the fantastically gorgeous look of a new bathroom.
